    Senior To Do List:

    • 1. Have taken or are registered up to take the ACT (packets are available in the guidance office or you can register online at www.act.org). If you are planning on attending Gadsden State Community College, you do not have to have an ACT score, but you will be required to take their placement test.
    • 2. Apply to at least two colleges that you are interested in attending. You can apply online for any college by going to their website, then going to admissions or incoming freshmen. You will need to notify the guidance counselor to send a transcript (this can be done by signing the transcript release book located in the guidance suite). Also after graduation in May, you will need to let us know where to send your final transcript.
    • 3. Apply for scholarships. You may not think you will qualify, but you sure can not get any money if you don't apply for it. Colleges have their majors scholarships, but most departments at each college will have additional scholarships for which you might qualify. Also please pay attention to announcements for local scholarships as they become available to us. I know you don't think $500 or $1000 is much, but it will help with books and living expenses and is well worth the time it takes to fill out the paperwork. A lot of the scholarships will ask for recommendations, so please complete a resume to give to the person you are asking to write the recommendation and give them several days notice. Many of the major universities have a deadline of December 1, so please be aware of your deadlines and don't miss them.
    • 4. Make an appointment to tour the colleges in which you are interested. Again this can be done through the college website. You can be given a principal's excuse for up to two days each semester, but you need to let an administrator and your teachers know in advance that you will be absent. Then be sure to bring a letter of attendance from the tour upon your return to school.
    • 5. After applying to the colleges, most will have a way for you to log onto their website and keep updated on whether or not they have received all the necessary documents for you to be accepted and to receive scholarship money
    • 6. In order to receive fmancial aid, you must fill out a F AFSA form. These forms will be available to you in the guidance office or online at www.fafsa.ed.gov (registering online is recommended). In order to complete this form however, your parents must have a completed income tax return, so please let them know this so they can plan on having their income taxes completed early in 2008.
    • 7. If you are an athlete and plan on attending college with an athletic scholarship, you must be cleared through the NCAA. If you have not already begun the process, please see Mrs. Tolbert as there are some changes this year.
    • 8. We also have someone from Gadsden State Community College in our school every Wednesday. Mrs. Swann is willing and able to help you with applications even if you are not attending GSCC. She is available to meet with students and/or parents to any questions. You can call the main office or the guidance office for an appointment if you are a parent or you can drop by when you have some down time in a class if you are a student.
    • 9. Attend the college fair on November 2, 2007. There will be recruiters from several major institutions and well as technical schools and the military.
    • 10. If you are interested in the military, we have recruiters available from all branches that will come to the school and meet with you, so please let us know you are interested and we will help you set this up.
    • 11. Pick a major for your college career. If you have no idea what you plan to do after college, that is okay, but you need to begin a search for areas in which you will do well and be happy. Most educational institutions have career planning centers where you can take personality and interest inventories to help you know your areas of strength and weakness. Take advantage of these opportunities.
