DRIVERS EDUCATION

The Driver Education Program at Southside High School is a successful, well-established program and meets all state requirements. It is a three-phase program designed to teach young adults safe and responsible driving. It consists of 30 hours of classroom work, 3 hours of simulated driving, and 3 hours of on-the-road driving.

STRENGTHS

   1. The class is taught by
Salli Mathis and Lee Vinson, both certified Driver Education instructors.  
   2. There are many different driving challenges located nearby which offer studentswork in various skills.
   3.A certificate of completion is issued to students for an insurance discount.
   4. Students can be license certified, thus eliminating the on-the-road exam at the driving range in Glencoe.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

   1. Develop techniques and procedures for coping with critical driving situations that lead to safe and responsible driving.
   2. Introduce students to basic terminology, signs, and symbols unique to the driving environment.
   3. Develop an appreciation of, and respect for, the Highway Transportation System and traffic laws.
   4. Give beginning drivers experience in a controlled, simulated environment, as well as actual driving, on-the-road, with a certified instructor.
